With more clients interested in discussing vision and purpose every day, I’ve lately been reminded of a famous old 60 Minutes interview with Tom Brady.
With multiple Super Bowl rings at home, a supermodel girlfriend on his arm, and a presumably very bright future spread out far ahead, the most remarkable part of the interview with this then 30-year-old football star wasn’t the close-up look at his achievements, but this very honest declaration:
Brady: “Why do I have 3 Super Bowl rings and still think there’s something greater out there for me? I mean, maybe a lot of people would say, ‘Hey man, this is what it is. I’ve reach my goal, my dream, my life is…’ Me, I think, ‘God, there’s gotta be more than this.'”
Interviewer: “What’s the answer?”
Brady: “I wish I knew! I wish I knew.”
I so appreciate the honesty and truth of this moment. And it’s one I’ve seen reflected in others time and again.
Regardless of our career path, regardless of the “success” we appear to achieve, we’re all wired for our own unique purpose, as well as our own vision for where we’d like to go in life.
If we don’t take the time to map all that out, then there’s a good chance that we won’t be satisfied with where we end up. Kind of like climbing to the very top of a tall ladder, only to discover that it’s leaned against the wrong building.
